20 june seminar

Please note that for our next seminar session, 20th of June, we will focus only on the Merks and Glazier 2005 paper. The reading list has been updated accordingly.

Next seminar session: Excitable media

For our next session we will discuss excitable media. We will have a short introducion to the concept for those who don't take the main NLD course, followed by a review of systems where this type of modelling is applicable (sections 2 and 3 of the Ermentrout and Edelstein-Keshet paper). Finally the two papers by Gerhard and Schuster illustrate the implementation of such models (don't need to read in advance of the seminar, but we will discuss an actual implementation of the models).

Interesting talk

In case you are interested a colloquium talk titled Self replicating DNA Nanostructures by Dr. Corinna Maass from NYU will take place Friday, April 26th 2013 at 16:30h in the Kleiner Physik-Hörsaal, Altbau der Fakultät für Physik. Here is the abstract:

Procreating one's genomic information through generations of copies is
one of the most basic characteristics of biological life, and there has
been a scientific interest in creating self replicating systems outside
biology ever since von Neumann's Theory of Self-Replicating Automata.
In designing an artificially replicating nanoscale system, DNA is a
highly useful building material: we can design sequences to hybridise
into almost arbitrary shapes and patterns, while its characteristic base
pair binding enables us to design highly selective interactions between
multiple species of DNA objects.
Based on Ned Seeman's pioneering work in DNA nanotechnology, we
present a binary system of DNA tiles designed to transmit their
sequence information to multiple generations of daughters.
A detailed study of the system has resulted in thermodynamic study on
multiple sticky end attachment as well as a method to effectively
catalyse tile bond formation by immobilising them on a template.
