The lecture consists of three main parts:
(I) The abstract motivation of quantum mechanics (C* algebras, GNS construction),
(II) Key elements of the theory of unbounded operators (spectral theorem, Stone theorem), and
(III) Scattering theory (Moeller operators, asymptotic completeness, multi-particle breakup).
Essential functional analysis will be introduced and selected topics will be treated in full mathematical rigor.
The course is intended for physicists with strong mathematical inclinations, but contact to the epistemological concepts of physics will be sought.
Keen interest in, and easiness with, mathematics, good knowledge of calculus and linear algebra; prior knowledge of functional analysis and measure theory will be helpful, but is not obligatory.
