TVI/TMP: Topology in Condensed Matter Physics – Overview
- Lecture notes
Lectures: Tuesdays and Thursdays 08:30 - 10:00 in room A449
Tutorials/Seminar: Tuesdays 12:00 - 14:00 in room A318
(we meet on Tue., 13.6. (6.6. is a university holiday) to discuss the topics of the seminar talks)
Prerequisites: Quantum Mechanics, Statistical Physics and a basic understanding of Solid State Theory as well as Quantum Field Theory
The aim of this course is to explore how ideas from topology changed our understanding of various phenomena in condensed matter physics.
Course outline (tentative):
- Topological defects: vortices and the Kosterlitz-Thouless transition, particle-vortex duality, monopoles
- Topological band theory: Chern number, topological insulators, Weyl semi-metals
- Topological order: spin liquids, Kitaev models, K-matrix theory
