TVI/TMP-TB1: Quantum Electrodynamics – Overview

Lecturer

About the lecture

Time and place

Tuesday 14:00-18:00 and Thursday 14:00-16:00, Theresienstr. 37 - A 348

The objective of this lecture is to introduce the quantum theory of fields (QFT) with applications in quantum electrodynamics (QED). Besides basic knowledge in special relativity and quantum mechanics, no prior knowledge is assumed for the general framework. Concerning applications elementary familiarity with electrodynamics as a classical field theory helps.

In order to get your Schein signed, you first fill in your data and then bring it to the Chair secretary (A327).

Topic overview:

  • States and observables in a general framework
  • Symmetries in quantum mechanics
  • Axioms of quantum field theory
  • The role of causality
  • Perturbative quantum field theory and scattering theory
  • Elementary scattering processes
  • Not so elementary scattering processes
  • The need for finite renormalisation
  • A modern algebraic perspective
