Welcome to the seminar on 'Ion Traps and their Applications'
Ion storage and related techniques, such as cooling and manipulation schemes for a targeted selection of charged particles, are widely employed in modern experiments. They allow for fundamental studies within the fields of Atomic and Nuclear Physics.
This seminar intends to introduce to the basic priciples of ion storage, manipulation, and detection techniques. Several of the key physics experiments will be addressed as examples:
- high-precision mass measurements (for nuclear structure and astrophysics applications)
- g-factor measurements for the study of quantum-electrodynamics (QED)
- trapping of anti-matter (for test of the CPT invariance)
- trap-assisted experiments for spectroscopy experiments, such as an in-situ observation of nuclear decays
