Many-body physics at the interface of ultra-cold atomic gases and condensed matter systems: Aspects from experiment and theory

This course will cover topics of modern many-body physics that are of interest to the fields of both condensed matter physics and ultra-cold atomic gases. We will give an introduction to the theoretical background and will then discuss experimental realization in ultra-cold atomic gases, as well as the results of key experiments.

  • Superfluidity and the BCS-BEC crossover
  • Bose-Hubbard model
  • Fermi-Hubbard model and its relevance for high-temperature superconductors
  • Quantum magnetism
  • Spin liquids
  • Topological insulators and artificial gauge fields
  • One-dimensional systems
  • Dynamical properties, non-equilibrium physics

Grading

The course is offered as a "Wahlpflichtvorlesung" within the Physics Masters program of LMU or the corresponding "Diplom" program. Grading will be done through oral examinations at the end of the course. An active participation in the tutorials and the Journal club is required to take the final examination!

Requirements: Quantum mechanics, some basic knowledge of second quantization and atomic physics would be helpful, yet is not required.
