TVI/TMP-TA3: Many Body Physics – Overview

You're allowed to bring anything in printed form (books, scripts, etc.), but NO electronic devices.


Lectures: Tuesdays and Thursdays 08:30 - 10:00 in room A449
Tutorials: Thursdays 16:00 - 18:00 in room A450

Prerequisites: Quantum Mechanics, Statistical Physics, Solid State Theory

The aim of this course is to learn basic methods of modern many-body theory and to apply them to various problems in condensed matter physics. At the end of the course students should have the tools to follow current research topics and be able to start independent research.


  1. Second quantization & applications
    (Hubbard- and Heisenberg models, SDW mean-field theory, weakly interacting bosons, BCS-theory of superconductivity)
  2. Functional integrals
    (Path-integral representation of the partition function, correlation functions)
  3. Diagrammatic perturbation theory
    (Feynman diagrams, Hartree-Fock, RPA, screening and plasmons)
  4. Linear response and Kubo formula
    (analytic properties of correlation functions, dielectric function, conductivity of disordered metals)
  5. Hubbard-Stratonovich transformation, collective modes
