TVI/TMP-TA4: Condensed Matter Many Body Physics and Field Theory II – Overview

IMPORTANT: due to the current COVID-19 situation the lectures and tutorials will be held online via zoom (a transition to classroom teaching may occur at a later time during the semester). Prerequisites:

Quantum Mechanics, Statistical Physics, Solid State Theory, Condensed Matter Many-Body Physics and Field Theory I (aka. "Many-Body Physics")

In this course we discuss different types of field theories that arise in condensed matter systems and introduce powerful methods to study them. A basic knowledge of many-body theory (2nd quantization, functional integrals, Green's functions) is required to follow the course.

Topics:

  1. Introduction
    (basics, review of functional integral formulation of QFT)
  2. Renormalization group
    (scaling, perturbative renormalization, functional RG, Kondo effect, superfluid-Mott transition in the Bose-Hubbard model, Fermi liquid theory)
  3. Quantum Hall effect
    (integer and fractional quantum Hall effect, Laughlin wavefunctions, Chern-Simons field theory)
  4. Non-equilibrium systems
    (Keldysh contour, kinetic equation)
